When friends began sharing tales about their stressed and anxious rising seniors, it was clear to me that
a major frustration was the prospect of completing college applications — including, and especially, the required essays. For many, merely thinking about writing produced panic and world-class procrastination.
I wanted to restore some sanity and fun to the process by helping students create personal narratives
they could be proud of. So I took my 35 years of experience as a public relations and marketing communications professional and learned how to coach students, from choosing a topic to hitting
"submit." Telling stories in a compelling way is a decent definition of what PR people do, so it was a
natural transition to help college-bound teenagers master the organizational and writing skills
necessary to tackle college essays.
The Uncommon Essay references the ubiquity of the Common Application and admissions officers’ weariness with boring,
formulaic essays. I believe everyone has great stories to tell and can be helped to develop their own voice and style.
I'm a graduate of Boston University’s College of Communication and have studied both essay and memoir writing at
New York University.
